CAPRIGHTS-VP outreach event at Igando Market.

On November 7, 2024, CAPRIGHTS-VP, in collaboration with the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), representatives from the Child Protection Network (CPN), and community women, organized a remarkable outreach event at Igando Market. This initiative was part of our continued commitment to raising awareness about the rights of child domestic workers and empowering the community with knowledge about available reporting mechanisms.

The bustling market, filled with over 300 traders and passers-by, became a platform for impactful engagement. Our team set up a vibrant outreach station adorned with banners and IEC materials to attract attention and spark curiosity. Volunteers and representatives worked together seamlessly to connect with the community, ensuring a welcoming and interactive environment.

The outreach began with a powerful introduction on the importance of safeguarding the rights of child domestic workers, focusing on the vulnerabilities they face and the need for collective community action. Through engaging speeches, real-life examples, and relatable narratives, the facilitators highlighted key issues such as child labor, abuse, neglect, and exploitation.

The use of storytelling, and question-and-answer sessions kept the audience captivated. CAPRIGHTS-VP volunteers facilitated interactive discussions, emphasizing practical steps community members could take to protect child domestic workers and report incidents of abuse.

Representatives from FIDA provided valuable legal insights, explaining how laws in Lagos State protect children from exploitation and how the public can play an active role in ensuring justice. The CPN representatives shared detailed information about accessible reporting mechanisms, such as emergency helplines and local agencies that support vulnerable children.

Community women were particularly active during the discussions, voicing their concerns and sharing their experiences. Many participants appreciated the opportunity to learn about resources they had been unaware of, expressing their readiness to advocate for change within their circles.

The outreach concluded with the distribution of informational leaflets, showcasing reporting hotlines and practical tips for identifying and addressing cases of child abuse. Participants were encouraged to become ambassadors for child protection in their community, ensuring the knowledge shared during the event spreads far and wide.

The success of this outreach at Igando Market demonstrates the power of partnerships and grassroots efforts in driving social change. CAPRIGHTS-VP, along with FIDA, CPN, and the community, remains dedicated to protecting vulnerable children and fostering a safer society for all.
