CAPRIGHTS-VP hosted a successful outreach at Ikotun Market

On April 11, 2024, CAPRIGHTS-VP hosted a successful outreach at Ikotun Market, engaging hundreds of community members in an enlightening and impactful campaign aimed at safeguarding the rights of child domestic workers and promoting community-wide awareness. In collaboration with our dedicated partners, including FIDA, the Child Protection Network (CPN), and representatives from local women’s groups, the event served as a platform for meaningful dialogue, education, and action.

The outreach drew the attention of traders, shoppers, and passers-by as volunteers set up strategic engagement points with colorful banners and informational materials. The program kicked off with an energizing introduction to the objectives of the day, emphasizing the urgent need to address the exploitation of child domestic workers and the importance of collective action to ensure their protection.

Interactive sessions formed the heart of the outreach, with CAPRIGHTS-VP volunteers Blessing and Judith facilitating engaging discussions on the rights of children and how communities can work together to safeguard vulnerable individuals. Participants learned about key reporting mechanisms, such as helplines, government agencies, and NGO support systems, that they could access in cases of abuse or exploitation.

Drama performances and role-playing scenarios brought to life the daily struggles faced by child domestic workers. These performances resonated deeply with the audience, helping them to empathize with these vulnerable children and understand how their actions could make a difference.

Representatives from FIDA provided legal insights, empowering community members with knowledge about laws protecting children and the responsibilities of parents, guardians, and employers. The CPN team reinforced this with practical guidance on identifying signs of abuse and offering support to affected children.

Many participants expressed gratitude for the knowledge shared, with some committing to being advocates for change within their circles. The outreach concluded with the distribution of informational materials containing reporting hotline numbers, tips for child protection, and guidance on fostering safe environments.

CAPRIGHTS-VP remains committed to creating lasting change through grassroots advocacy and partnerships. This outreach at Ikotun Market marks another milestone in our mission to protect child domestic workers and promote a culture of care and accountability within communities.
